Garrett Pro-Pointer AT Z-Lynk and MS-3 Headphones – Our Review!
I remember the time when we were digging without a pinpointer and, moreover, we did not even know what it was and why we needed it. And I won’t even mention wireless headphones – for us it was a completely different world and we did not even think about it. Detecting then was something special, at the level of semi-legal business and movement, when everyone was hiding while digging, and only dug at remote locations away from curious bystanders, so no headphones were used. And the finds were found only by taking the ground in the palm of your hand and shaking it in front of the metal detector coil. And it was normal, no one knew and did not know any alternative.
This, however, ended when I learned about pinpointers and my wife gave me my first pinpointer on my birthday, that was joy and happiness. 🙂 And then my friends saw that I fond objects with pinpointers much quicker and easier, and they also wanted to take hold of this wonder, so my advice to you, my dear friends; a pinpointer during detecting is just necessary! Like wireless headphones, it makes our life much easier.
Earlier this year, the company Garrett released a wireless pin-pointer, which can be connected to the MS-3 headphones and a Z-Lynk transmitter. We already wrote about this pinpointer earlier – the Garrett Pro Pointer AT Z-Lynk – a novelty of 2018, also we wrote about the wireless transmitter from Garrett – a review of the Garrett Z-Lynk.
The Garrett “Carrot” has long been popular with diggers around the world, and for a good reason – this pinpointer is easy to set up and use, very light and convenient, the color is good – you will not lose it in the field, and it is submersible under water. So, with the new variation of “carrots”, there were also made some changes: first, as already written above, the pin is now wireless and it can be connected to the headphones MS-3 and the transmitter (receiver) Z-Lynk. That is, you can hear the sound from the pinpointer in your own headphones connected to the Z-Lynk wireless module, or if you have the MS-3 headphones, then connect to them. It’s simple! And secondly, the pin-pointer has become even more waterproof and allows diving up to 6 meters with it! A serious change really, and now this pinpointer can easily be used during underwater detecting. The pinpointer is also lightweight, weighing 200 grams.
To connect the pinpointer to the MS-3 or the Z-Lynk module, you just need to turn on one of these devices, bring the turned-off pin to a distance of no more than 15 cm, then turn on the pin – it will automatically connect to the wireless device. Once you have connected the pinpointer, a red light will light up on your device – no need to perform any button presses.
The next time you turn it on, you do not need to reconnect, the pinpointer and the wireless device remember each other and automatically activate when you start up.
I use the Z-Lynk wireless module on my Teknetics detector, which is very convenient because no wires are needed to connect the MS-3 wireless headphones to the metal detector. The sound transmits fast and without delays, just like with the pinpointer, I hear the pinpointer without any delays.
Interestingly, when the Garrett pinpointer is connected to the headphones, in addition to the pinpointer, we simultaneously hear our metal detector. On this topic, I’ll write a separate post, where I’ll consider the pros and cons of this system, so stay tuned 😉
And the Z-Lynk is connected directly to the headphone jack of your metal detector. It can be any metal detector, so the problem with wires you can easily solve if you have this module and the MS-3 headphones.
The headphones themselves are light and comfortable, they securely sit on your ears, so that nothing gets in your way during detecting, you’ll only hear your metal detector. This is especially important if you dig near a road or when there is a strong wind – it is possible that without headphones you’ll skip signals, I myself have already faced this because I live by the sea and the sea wind can very often drown out all sounds.
In general, this is my conclusion – at the moment it is the best wireless system that I’ve used so far. It is fast, convenient, there are no delays, the battery lasts for a long time and it will last a very long time, I definitely recommend it!
