Garrett AT MAX – New Metal Detector From Garrett! (New For 2017, Specifications, Photos+)
So, it happened! Garrett long held the intrigue and tried to create a little stir among the fans, because there was not any news or even rumors about the metal detector yet. I knew in advance only that it would work with wireless headphones. And that it would be a continuation of the Garrett AT PRO. And so it turned out.
Garrett AT MAX – what’s new?
In fact, not so much. In short:
- A sound transmitter which allows you to work with the receiver from the Z-Lynk, as well as with the new wireless headphones Garrett MS-3.
- A promised increased target detection depth in the current mode A / M (all metals).
- Backlight! Well, finally!
- The ground balance is improved – now you will be able to auto-balance it more correctly.
- Larger numbers on the display.
- Adjustable Threshold – and this is actually very useful.
- Improved abilities on highly mineralized soils – you can now go digging on the salt water beach and dive into the sea.
- New search modes.
The rest was all in one form or another in the Garrett AT PRO.
As can be seen on video with Steve (the marketing director of Garrett) – the design is inspired form the AT PRO. Well, the characteristics of it for diving was not the best on the AT PRO, many diggers complained about problems with leaking into the display, and some even sealed it themselves.
The search modes
The numbers really became bigger. And, fortunately, they included the normal search modes form AT PRO plus one new, now there are four modes:
- All metals
- Custom
- Coins
- Zero (?)
What the last mode is, we will see later.

Threshold – one of the most useful options for detecting. If you are taking detecting seriously – learn how to use it, and you will be guaranteed more finds! (The main thing is not to overdo it with the adjustment).

And the headphones. New and wireless. It is convenient to look at, but it will be interesting to look at their characteristics: how long the battery holds, the coefficient of the resistance, the weight and so on.
Underwater detecting will require other headphones with a wire, remember – in the water, the wireless signal will not be transmitted.
Yes, wireless headphones are included in the kit! And because of this, it seems, the price got higher. On average such headphones go for around $ 90-120.

The price of the detector
All this fun costs $ 849.95 USD in MSRP, which means the highest recommended retail price. In the United States they usually sell everything cheaper than the MSRP, and in the rest of the world it will be somewhere in the range of 800-900 dollars.

I have never used the AT Pro but am thinking about a new detector . This one has lots of bells & whistles I hope the price gets better . Sure looks like it will do the job.
Well, will see. This AT MAX looks like a good evolution of AT PRO, but Garrett needs some high end machine to replace GTI2500!
Well…ok…same coil. Same housing. Probably same heavy weight and not well balanced. I’m a die hard garrett user. Not a hater. I have 2 ace 250s and an at pro. My ace with a big coil is still better balanced than the at pro. Still no volume control? Really guys! Weak! Wireless headphones great but batteries…and not waterproof. Display looks just like new ace series. Overall underwhelming. I’ll stick with my 250.
Wow! 2 ACEs? But what is the point?
“The rest was all in one form or another in the Garrett AT PRO.” The only two things that are the same as the AT Pro is the look of the detector and the waterproof ability. The AT Gold has a true all metal mode as does the Max. The AT Pro did not. The Max is operating at 13.5 KHz where the ATP operates at 15. The ATG operates at 18 KHz. 13.5 KHz along with the all metal mode is where the increase in depth will come from.
Zero mode = filters are still in use. All metal mode means no filters.
$722.45 American currency. When you consider cost and the new upgrades , the value is great. Cheaper then the MXS and the Max comes with wireless headphones.
And still with same idiotic (constructed and unaccessible positioned) Garrett watertight connector.
This connector is reason for me to not to buy it.
Wow just over $700 when it comes to the UK we will get stung on price bet here in UK it will be close to £900 its not called rip of britain for nothing.
